Mitch Robinson most impressive in NAB Cup debut

Friday, 20 February, 2009

A text message from a rival AFL club recruiting manager put a stunning explanation mark on Mitch Robinson's first big-time hit out for Carlton.

"Pencil him in for round 1 he was fantastic," the text to a Velocity Sports representative said of Robinson's NAB Cup debut for the Blues against North Melbourne.

Robinson showed enormous potential despite suffering a heavy early knock from North's Michael Firrito in his first contest which left him with a 'corkie' and had onlookers thinking his night was done before it had really begun.

He was also forced off the ground in the second term under the blood rule after a heavy knock to the nose, but he refused to stay down.

Starting on a wing and spending time up forward and through the midfield, he finished with 17 possessions, including an assist in two goals, to win lavish praise from television commentators.

He also had four marks, six contested possessions and  68% effective rate.Brendan Fevola takes a hanger over Michael Firrito

"He's been absolutely outstanding," said Channel 7's Bruce McAvaney of Robinson, who was named among Carlton's best in a 53-point win over North at Telstra Dome.

Full forward Brendan Fevola kicked six goals, including a supergoal, as Carlton were much the better side, winning 1.17.12 (123) to 0.11.4 (70).
