Snapshot

Simon Black is the most decorated player presently playing in the AFL and one of the great ball-winning midfielders of all-time.

The Brisbane Lions No.20 has done it all. Three premierships, a Brownlow Medal, a Norm Smith Medal, three club championships, three All-Australian selections and now two years as a club captain among a multitude of other honors. And his amazing CV could quite easily have read even more impressively. He has also been runner-up in the Brownlow Medal twice and has placed second in the Brisbane club championship twice. Yet that is only half of the story of the 29-year-old left-footer drafted from East Fremantle at No.31 in the 1997 AFL National Draft.

He is among the most unaffected individuals playing AFL football, and is admired by teammates and opponents alike as much for his generous and considerate nature as much as his sublime football talents.

In 2002 he was just the sixth player in the 107-year history of the League to win back-to-back B&F's in back-to-back premiership sides, and the sixth man to win the Brownlow Medal and his club championship in a premiership year.

From Round 19, 2000, until the 2004 Grand Final he played 107 consecutive games, including every game of the four premiership years of 2001-02-03-04, and from Round 19, 2000 until the end of the 2008 season he played 189 of a possible 195 games, missing three singles games through injury on top of a three-match suspension incurred in the '04 grand final.

Season 2010

In his 13th AFL season Simon Black has not slowed down. Despite having 274 games under his belt, Black averaged almost 26 possessions across the 18 games he played in 2010. He suffered from a calf injury early in the season, received a fine for abusing an umpire and missed a game with an ankle injury later in the year.

Season 2009

Black missed the first round of the 2009 season, after undergoing ankle surgery and breaking his hand in the pre-season, but played every game for the remainder of the season. After leading the Lions in a number of key stats he finished in the top five of the Brownlow Medal for the third consecutive year, finishing equal fourth with Jonathan Brown. He again finished second in the club Best & Fairest, was voted Players' Player of the Year and took out the Courier Mail Player of the Year award for the fourth time.

Season 2008

In 2008 Black was surprisingly beaten by Jonathan Brown for the club championship after finishing runner-up in the Brownlow to the Western Bulldogs, having led at Round 16. He was again named the Club's Best Midfielder and won Courier Mail Player of the Year award. At the end of the year when Brisbane named Jonathan Brown as its sole captain, Black was named as one of the club's four vice-captains.
