Whitecross is 'Most Improved' at HawksBrendan Whitecross on stage with MC Stephen Phillips

Brendan Whitecross closed an outstanding break-out season  at Hawthorn tonight by winning the club's "Most Improved Player" Award.

The 19-year-old defender was recognized by the Hawks match committee in front of a sell-out crowd of 1300 at Crown Palladium as captain Sam Mitchell polled 170 votes to win the Peter Crimmins Medal as Club Champion from Cyril Rioli (123) and Lance Franklin (121)..

Whitecross, who debuted in the Round 1 grand final replay against Geelong after spending entire 2008 season in the VFL, polled 31 votes to finish 21st in the B&F vote-count a fantastic effort given that he only played 13 of 22 games.

Among those he beat were Robert Campell (29), Xavier Ellis (27), Best First-Year Player Liam Shiels (27), Josh Kennedy (27), Travis Tuck (23), Jarryd Morton (21), Stuart Dew (20), first-round draft pick Ryan Schoenmakers (20), Cameron Stokes (18) and Clinton Young (10).

Mitchell also picked up the award for Most Consistent and Clinton Young was awarded Best Clubman.

Votes for the Crimmins Medal were awarded by Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson and Assistant Coaches Damien Hardwick, John Barker and Ross Smith after each home and away match.Brendan Whitecross with his award and proud father PhilA maximum of 16 votes could be accumulated by a player after the four coaches' voting cards were submitted using the following grading system:

  • 3 votes to the best player or players
  • 2 votes for a good game
  • 1 vote to players who beat their opponents

On rare occasions a player or players may receive 4 votes for an exceptional game.
